Deconstructing a Question

Many students struggle knowing how to begin writing a response to a question whether it be  interpretive, imaginative or persuasive. The most effective way is to begin with the question itself (not a studied text!). Deconstructing or unpacking the question is necessary to ensure you understand the concepts you are being asked to write about and pick up on the nuances of the question.

HARP

H - highlight key words in the question (concepts & instructions)

A - annotate the question providing definitions and synonyms

R - rewrite the question in your own words

P - plan your response

The strategy opposite works particularly well when writing an analytical response such as an essay however it can be used for all forms of writing. Ideally you would spend 5 minutes deconstructing the question (in an exam/assessment) before moving on to the writing process. By spending this valuable time with the question, you ensure they understand each and every part of it. Remember, exams are stressful! It's easy to skip over a word or phrase if you're not careful.
